Phyllis Merriam and Victor Merriam are printmakers in both digital and analog versions most recently having made some of the largest formatted 3D relief prints on the Big Mama Press at Blackburn Studios. They have collaborated to incorporate digital technology into their printmaking processes seeking to develop the painterly impasto of 3 dimensionality. Like Monet but for different reasons, the couple returns to a place repeatedly to examine the way objects within it may have changed in time. Through this method Monet sought to study light as it hit objects and the way it changed at different seasons and times of day. After photographing a natural scene with its objects, the Merriams return to their studio examine their photographs, and experiment while changing the object or context abstracting from their motifs.
