Joanne Ross and Michael McKeown share a love for Robert Smithson’s earth works, their environment, and photography. Formally, their work also relates to England’s Stonehenge where the verticality of the standing stones are suggestive of the rocket and missile motifs in their work. Michael helped Joanne understand the 3-dimensional form and she inspired him to use photography as another of his media. The couple is dedicated to social justice, issues of war and nuclear fall-out seen in her work American Amnesia and in his Missile Museum series. Both of them pun on global militarization and nuclear armament challenging the resulting waste of resources while justifying the global arms race.
