Yong Chang Chung (B. 1957, Mokpo)
Yong Chang Chung moved to Germany in 1983 when South Korea’s political situation was unstable and settled in Düsseldorf, where he currently lives, and he has been actively exhibiting his art in South Korea and Europe. His life of living as a foreigner and the Other during his extended residence abroad gave the artist the courage to directly face, rather than reject, the shadows of human development. While accepting historic events and political issues such as the destruction of humanity due to war and the violation of human rights by government violence as his art’s subjet matter, the themes of his art are ultimately respect for life and human rights and yearnings for peace. Poetic inpsiration is added for a strong visual focus to stand out in his works, in which the artist depicts the subjects with naturalistic techniques but captures the substantial essence through shades of gray like in the East’s ink-wash painting.
Major one-person exhibitions include Share Breath (MDSM, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2022), Black Memorial installation (Sangmu Hall, Gwangju, 2018), Confronted (Gwangju Museum of Art, 2016), Auguste Rodin Rendezvous Yongchang Chung (Graphik Museum Pablo Picasso, Münster, Germany, 2008), and Life (Dusseldorf, Germany, 1994). Group exhibitions include the 2018 Gwangju Biennale special exhibition 《Boundary and Bridge》 (Dambit Art Warehouse, Damyang, 2018), the 2014 Gwangju Biennale Sweet Dew -After 1980 (Gwangju Biennale exhibition hall, 2014), Chasm (Busan Biennale, 2004), Altars (Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, Germany, 2001), and War & Peace (1994, History Museum, Warsaw, Poland).

정영창은 한국의 정치 상황이 불안정하던 1983년 독일로 이주 후 현재 뒤셀도르프에 정착하여 한국과 유럽을 중심으로 활발히 전시 활동해 오고 있다. 오랜 외국 생활에서 이방인, 타자로 살아온 그의 삶은 작가에게 인류 발전의 그림자를 거부하기보다 직시하는 용기를 갖게 했다. 전쟁으로 인한 인간성의 파괴, 국가 폭력에 의한 인권 유린 같은 역사적 사건, 정치적 이슈를 작품의 소재로 받아들이면서 결국 생명과 인권의 존중, 평화의 염원을 주제로 하고 있다. 사실적인 기법으로 대상을 묘사하지만 동양의 수묵화처럼 오직 검정의 농담으로 실체의 본질을 포착한 그의 작품은 시적 영감이 더해져 강한 시각적 집중력이 돋보인다.
