Yoan Choe (B. 1974, Naju)
The artist majored in painting at Chonnam National University. Greatly interested in history and society, he is profoundly impressed by Korea’s minjung art, which he first learned of in college. Later, as he studies Korean and Western realism in depth, he earnestly presents works including his thoughts on society and reality. The works’ format is collage painting in which the artist represents certain forms using text and images appearing in newspapers, magazines, and other media, and such a work method has the advantages of possibly maximizing the message through a reversal effect and indirectly showing the epochal situation that is the background of the works. With “Art should openly reflect reality” as his motto, he continues experiments of new forms while moving between the several genres of collage, painting, and installation art.
Choe’s one-person exhibitions include To Live in This Land (Dalmwe Art Museum, Damyang, 2008), Military Social Complex (Lotte Gallery, Gwangju, 2011), The Phenomenal World (Gallery Saeng-gak Sangja, Gwangju, 2016), and Deja-vu (May 18 Memorial Culture Center, Gwangju, 2020), and he exhibited in over 200 group exhibitions. The artist was selected by the Gwangju Museum of Art to exhibit in Ha Jung-Woong Young Artist Invitational Exhibition: Light 2015, and he won various art festival and contest awards including the Jeollanam-do Art Exhibition Grand Prize (2010), Daedong Art Prize (2007), and the 6th Nam-nong Art Exhibition Greatest Excellence Award (2011). He was an artist-in-residence at the Gwangju Museum of Art Palgak-jeong Studio (2009-2010) and the Beijing Residency, Gwangju Museum of Art (2010).

작가는 전남대학교에서 회화를 전공했다. 역사와 사회에 대해 관심이 많았던 그는 대학시절에 처음 접한 한국 민중미술에 큰 감명을 받는다. 이후, 대학원에서 한국과 서구의 리얼리즘을 깊이 연구하게 되면서 사회와 현실에 대한 본인의 생각을 담은 작업을 본격적으로 선보이게 된다. 작업의 형식은 신문과 잡지, 각종 미디어에 나오는 텍스트와 이미지를 이용해 모종의 형상을 그려내는 콜라주 회화인데, 이러한 작업방식은 반전 효과를 통해 메시지를 극대화 시킬 수 있고, 작품 배경의 되는 시대 상황까지 간접적으로 보여줄 수 있는 장점이 있다. “예술은 현실의 어두운 부분까지 반영해야 한다”는 모토 아래에, 콜라주와 회화, 설치 등 여러 장르를 넘나들며 새로운 형식의 실험들을 이어 나가고 있다.
개인전으로 《이 땅에 살기 위하여》(달뫼미술관, 담양, 2008), 《Military social complex》(롯데갤러리, 광주, 2011), 《The Phenomenal World》(갤러리 생각상자, 광주, 2016), 《Deja-vu》(5ㆍ18기념 문화센터, 광주, 2020) 전시를 실시했고 200여 회의 단체전에 참여했다. 광주시립미술관에서 선정하는 《하정웅 청년작가 초대전-빛 2015》의 초대작가로 선정된 바 있으며, 전라남도미술대전 대상(2010), 대동미술상(2007), 제6회 남농미술대전 최우수상(2011) 등 다수의 미술제 및 공모전에서 수상하였다. 광주시립미술관 팔각정 스튜디오(2009-2010)와 중국 북경 창작스튜디오 2기(2010-2011)의 레지던시 경력이 있다.
