Sobin Park (B. 1971, Gwangju)
Sobin Park earned her MFA from the Graduate School of Chosun University and is solidifying her standing as an international artist with focused activity in Seoul, New York, Beijing, and Venice, but it was the influence of Professor Dong-Seok Won, whom she met as an art student at Mokpo National University, that guided her first steps as an artist. She became capable of recognizing an artwork’s social value and personal significance, and she also joined the May art group Gwangju-Jeonnam Artist Collective in the early 1990s and became awakened to reality-participatory art. The currently exhibited Period Self-Portrait at Age 21 (1991) is an early oil painting that was painted then. The self-portait ironically holding hope despite the visible fear before a barricade symbolizing the era’s pain honestly and realistically represents a youth searching for life’s identity. Sobin Park’s later works are on the themes of love and relationships as life’s essential meaning, and the artist contrasts the dragon as a mythical image with the female figure while dedicating herself solely to pencil drawing.
After starting out with a solo exhibition at the Kumho Culture Center in Gwangju in 1993, she has exhibited in at least 15 one-person exhibitions in New York and Europe, including at Tenri Gallery in New York (2007), the Chelsea Art Museum (2009), the Gabarron Foundation in New York and Barcelona (2013), the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete (2015), the Today Art Museum in Beijing (2017), Laboratorium-Venezia in Venice (2019), and Elga Wimmer Gallery in New York (2020). She participated in the Bushwick Artist Residency in New York and the Vermont Studio Center residency, and she has been splitting her time between South Korea and Beijing since her Beijing debut as a member of the Beijing Studio, Gwangju Museum of Art’s third-term cohort.
박소빈(1971년 광주 출생)
박소빈은 조선대 대학원을 졸업하고 서울, 뉴욕, 베이징, 베니스를 중심으로 국제적인 작가로 입지를 다지고 있지만 그녀의 작가로서 첫걸음을 이끌어 준 것은 목포대학교 미술학과 재학 시기에 만난 원동석 교수의 영향이었다. 미술 작품이 가지는 사회적 가치, 개인적 의미를 인지하게 되었고 1990년대 초 오월 미술 그룹인 전남 광주미술인공동체에 가입하여 현실 참여미술에도 눈을 떴다. 이번 전시 작품 <21살 시대 자화상>(1991)은 바로 그 시기에 제작된 초기 유화 작품이다. 시대의 아픔을 상징하는 바리케이드 앞에 서 있는 두려움이 깃든 모습에도 역설적으로 희망을 간직한 자화상은 삶의 정체성을 모색하던 젊음을 솔직하고 리얼하게 표현하고 있다. 이후 박소빈의 작품은 오직 연필 드로잉 작업에 매진하면서 신화 이미지로서 용과 여성의 몸을 대비하며 삶의 본질적 의미로 사랑과 관계를 주제로 작품하고 있다.
1993년 광주 금호문화회관 개인전을 시작으로 뉴욕 텐리갤러리(2007), 뉴욕 첼시 아트뮤지엄(2009), 뉴욕과 바르셀로나 가바론재단(2013), 아테네 크레타현대미술관(2015), 베이징 금일미술관(2017) , 베니스 Laboratorium-Venezia (2019), 뉴욕 엘가위머갤러리(2020) 등에서 15회 이상 뉴욕과 유럽에 개인전을 선보였다. 뉴욕 부쉬윅 레지던시, 뉴욕 버몬트 레지던시 등의 프로그램에 참여했으며 광주시립미술관이 베이징에 설립한 광주창작스튜디오 3기생으로 베이징에 진출한 이후 한국과 베이징 등을 오가며 활동하고 있다.
