Kyung-taek Na (B.1949, Naju)
In May 1980, when the Gwangju Democratic Uprising took place, Na Kyung-taek was at the center of the scene as a photojournalist for the Jeonnam Daily News (entered in 1967). On May 19, 1980, he captured a scene where a paratrooper wearing a Red Cross armband in front of the Jeonil Building grabbed a young man in his twenties and struck him on his back and head with a club. This photo was transmitted to a foreign news agency and became a clue to the world about the harsh violence of the military regime against citizens, and it became an opportunity for foreign reporters to gather in Gwangju. Na believed in the authenticity of photography and the importance of records, and therefore, saved these historical moments in the democratic uprising through his camera lens, but he was unable to publish his photos due to excessive censorship at the time.
The photo he took in May 1980 was released into the world at the May 18 Gwangju Uprising Photography Exhibition (Gwangju, Busan, 1987) hosted by the Justice and Peace Committee of the Catholic Archdiocese of Gwangju. This exhibition was published as photo books 『Gwangju in May』 (1987) and 『When the Day Comes in May』 (1987). Since then, more data have been collected and the photo book 『Angles and Eyes』 (2007) was published. As a photojournalist who recorded the pain of the times, he received the ‘Courageous Journalist Award’ (1990) and the Korea Journalists Association’s ‘Reporter of the Month Award’ (1994). On May 18, 2011, his “black-and-white film documenting the Gwangju Democratization Movement” was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For many, Na’s photos are the most important documentary evidence of the Gwangju Uprising. They were collected both in the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement Archives. and in the May 18 Memorial Foundation. In addition to that, Na had a photography exhibition accompanied by a special lecture both in Postdam, Germany (2017) and Los Angeles, California (2018). He has worked as a witness to the Gwangju Uprising.
나경택 (1949년 나주 출생)
광주 민주 항쟁이 일어났던 1980년 5월, 나경택은 전남매일신문의 사진기자로 (1967년 입사) 그 현장의 중심에 있었다. 그는 1980년 5월 19일 전일빌딩 앞 적십자 완장을 찬 공수부대원이 20대 청년을 붙잡아 곤봉으로 머리와 등을 치고 있는 장면을 포착했다. 이 사진은 외국 통신사로 전해서 시민에 대한 군부 정권의 가혹한 폭력을 세계에 알리는 단서가 되었고 이후 외국 기자들이 광주로 모여드는 계기가 되었다. 사진의 진실성, 기록으로 중요성을 믿은 작가는 민주 항쟁의 역사적 순간들을 카메라 렌즈를 통해 저장했지만, 당시 과다한 검열로 그의 사진을 발표하지 못했다.
그가 찍은 1980년 5월을 기록한 사진이 세상에 나온 것은 천주교 광주대교구 정의 평화 위원회의 주관으로 실시된 《5.18 광주민중항쟁 사진전》(광주, 부산, 1987)이다. 이 전시는 사진집 『오월 광주』(1987), 『오월 그날이 오면』(1987)로 출간되었고 이후, 더 많은 자료가 모아져 『앵글과 눈동자』 (2007) 사진집이 출간되었다. 시대의 아픔을 기록한 기자로서 그는 ‘용기 있는 기자상'(1990), 한국 기자협회 ‘이달의 기자상’(1994)을 받았다. 2011년 5.18에는 그의 ‘광주민주화운동을 기록한 흑백 필름’이 유네스코 세계기록 문화유산으로 등재되었다. 그의 사진은 5.18을 증언하는 가장 중요한 자료로 5.18 기록관, 5.18 기념재단에 소장 되어 있다. 2017년 독일 포츠담, 2018년 미국 LA에서 그의 사진전과 특강이 있었고, 그는 한국과 세계에 광주민중 항쟁을 알리는 증인이 되고 있다. 동강대 겸임교수와 광주 평화방송 이사 등을 역임했다.
