Kyoung-ho Shin (B. 1949, Gwangju)
Kyoung-ho Shin earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in painting and art, respectively, at Seoul National University. Since 1977, he taught at Chonnam National University, first at the College of Education and then at the Department of Fine Art in the College of Arts. Rather than seeking comfort in the academic system, the artist participated in the art coterie Reality & Speech (formed in 1979), which was started to stand up to a world full of violence and irrationality in the 1980s. His art realm, including a critical voice, was esteemed through individual works such as Grave, Flag, Barking Dog, signifying the Namdo area’s cultural heritage, an awareness of death, and poetic metaphor. He has been focusing on the full settlement and expansion of Korean realist art as the director of the Dalmwe Art Museum in Changpyeong, which opened in 2005.
Kyoung-ho Shin’s first one-person exhibition was Present and Absent is the Spirit, at Least, and (Seoul Arts Center, Gwangju Museum of Art, 1992), he was an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center in America from June to September 1996, was a visiting professor at the Harvard University Korea Institute from 1997 to 1999, and had the solo exhibition Open Studio Show (Stone-Silo Gallery, Massachusetts, U.S.A.,1997). He exhibited in various exhibitions in Korea and abroad, including 15 Years of Minjung Art (National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art, Korea, 1994), the first Gwangju Biennale exhibition, Beyond the Borders (Gwangju Biennale Hall, 1995), the third Gwangju Biennale exhibition, Man & Space (Gwangju Biennale Hall, 2000), Gwangju-Istanbul Art Exchange Exhibition: Across the Bosporus Strait (Isik Museum, Istanbul, Turkey, 2008), and Democracy, Human Rights & Peace: May, Gwangju Minjung Art of the 1980s (Gwangju Museum of Art, 2013).
신경호 (1949년 광주 출생)
신경호는 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과를 거쳐 동대학원에서 미술학 석사학위를 취득했다. 그는 1977년 이후 전남대학교 사범대학을 거쳐 예술 대학 미술학과에 봉직했다. 작가는 아카데미 체제에 안주하기보다 1980년대 폭력과 부조리로 가득 찬 세상에 맞서기 위해 창립한 미술동인 ‘현실과 발언'(1979년 결성)에 참여하였다. 비판의 목소리를 담은 그의 작품 세계는 ‘무덤’, ‘깃발’, ‘짓는 개’ 같은 남도의 문화적 유산, 죽음에 대한 의식, 시적인 은유가 함축된 독자적 작품으로 평가받았다. 2005년에 개관한 창평 달뫼미술관 관장으로 한국 리얼리즘 미술의 본격적인 정착과 확산에 주력해 왔다.
신경호는 첫 개인전 《넋이라도 있고 없고》(예술의 전당, 서울/ 광주시립미술관, 광주, 1992)가졌고 1996년6월부터 9월까지 미국 버몬트 VSC에서 레지던시 작가로 참여했고 1997년부터 1999년까지는 미국 하버드대학교 한국학연구소 방문 교수를 지냈고, 개인전 《Open Studio show》(STONE-SILO 갤러리, 메사추세츠, 미국, 1998)을 가졌다. 《민중미술 15년전》(국립현대미술관, 과천, 1994), 제 1회 광주 비엔날레 《경계를 넘어》(광주비엔날레 전시장, 광주, 1995), 제 3회 광주 비엔날레 《인(人)+간(間)》(광주비엔날레 전시장, 광주, 2000)에 출품하였고, 《광주×이스탄불 미술교류전-보스폴로스해협을 건너》(Isik Museum, 이스탄불, 터어키, 2008), 《민주×인권×평화전-오월, 1980년대 광주민중미술》(광주시립미술관, 광주, 2013) 등 국내외 각종 전시회에 참여하였다.
