Jun-seok Lee (B. 1958, Gwangju)
Jun-seok Lee experienced the May 18 Democratization Movement when he was a college senior at the Chosun University art department. He was an active member of the Woodcut Print Research Group in the 1980s and the Gwangju-Jeonnam Artist Community in the 1990s. The Hwaeom(Avatamska) Gwangju series, representing the Gwangju Uprising and the most noted among his works, has been continued since 1996 on the same theme, with colorful changes in expression methods and contents. The artist’s art realm is expanding its popular aspect through various subject matter, but his consistent issue is democratic and liberal yearnings and humanism, and he aims for reality-participatory art.
Since his first exhibition at the Injae Art Museum in Gwangju in 1992, Jun-seok Lee exhibited in many solo exhibitions in Gwangju, Suwon, and Seoul, including Incomplete Time: Flowering the Flower of Hwaeom (Gwangju May 18 Memorial Culture Center Gallery, 2008), Be Blossomed as a Flower in Each Heart (Gwangju Museum of Art, 2016), and Jun-seok Lee Flower Painting Invitational Exhibition: A Flower Came to Me (Gwangju May Art Museum, 2022). Major group exhibitions include May Exhibition: 10-Day Uprising 10-Year History (Nambong Art Museum, Gwangju, 1990,), 15 Years of Minjung Art (National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art, Korea, 1994), JAALA Exhibition (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, 1994), ’95 Reunification Art Festival (1995, Gwangju Mangwol-dong May Cemetery), and Gwangju Biennale 20th Anniversary Special Exhibition: Sweet Dew (2014, Gwangju Museum of Art). He won the fifth Gwangju Art Award (1999), served as the president of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Artist Community and as the executive committee chairperson of the 1995 Gwangju Anti-Biennale, and is currently on the steering committees of the Korean National Artists Federation and the Gwangju Art Award.
이준석(1958년 광주 출생)
이준석은 조선대학교 미술과 다니던 대학 4학년 때, 5.18민주화운동을 겪었다. 80 년대 목판화연구회, 90년대 광주전남미술인공동체의 일원이 되어 활발한 활동을 펼쳤다. 그의 작품 중 가장 주목을 받는 광주항쟁을 형상화한 <화엄광주> 시리즈는1995년부터 지속해서 제작되고 있는 주제로 표현방식과 내용이 다채롭게 변화되어오고 있다. 작가의 작품 세계는 다양한 소재로 대중성을 넓혀가고 있지만, 그의 일관된 화두는 ‘민주화와 자유에 대한 열망과 휴머니즘’이며 현실 참여 예술을 지향하고 있다.
이준석은 1992년 광주 인재미술관에서 첫 발표전 이후, 광주×수원×서울에서 가진 개인전을 비롯하여 《미완의 세월-화엄의 꽃 피우기》 (광주 5․18기념문화센터 전시실, 2008), 《가슴마다 꽃으로 피어 있으라》(광주시립미술관, 2016), 《이준석 그림전-꽃이 내게로 왔다 초대전》 (광주 오월미술관, 2022) 등 다수의 개인전을 가졌다. 주요 단체전은 《오월전-10일간의 항쟁10년간의 역사전》(광주 남봉미술관, 1990), 《민중미술 15년전》(과천 국립현대미술관, 1994), 《JAALA전》(일본 동경도미술관, 1994), 《95광주통일미술제》(광주 망월동 오월묘역, 1995), 《광주비엔날레 20주년 특별전-달콤한 이슬》(광주시립미술관,2014) 등에 참여하였다. 제5회 광주 미술상(1999)을 수상하였고, 광주전남미술인공동체 회장, 1995년 광주 안티비엔날레 집행위원장을 엮임 했으며, 한국민족예술인총연합, 광주미술상운영위원회 운영위원으로 활동 중이다.
