Jin-ho Cho (B. 1952, Gwangyang)
The 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising was an important turning point in Jin-ho Cho’s art realm. He had worked as a central member of the Gwangju minjung art movement, with art participating in reality by directly speaking out about social and political issues. He founded the Gwangju Woodcut Print Research Group and the Gwangju-Jeonnam Artist Community and dedicated himself to a locally spontaneous national art movement. A street exhibition took place in the Geumnam-ro Street area in 1990, and Massacre was a woodcut print that was exhibited in it. In this piece, a scene of airborne troops atrociously massacring citizens under Mount Mudeung is testified to. The artist has been changing his materials as he went through different mediums and expression methods, including the early oil painting, woodcut prints and ink-wash painting in the 1980s, watercolors in the 1990s, and mixed media since 2000.
Cho exhibited in over 20 one-person exhibitions in Gwangju, Seoul, and China; including the 1984 printmaking exhibition Weeding (Gwangju Academy Gallery), Woodcut Prints (Gwangju K Gallery, Seoul Yoon Gallery, 1989), Jin-ho Cho Watercolors (Gallery SVAX, Tokyo, 1991-1992), and To View the World (Lotus Gallery, Gwangju, 2018). Major group exhibitions since the 1990s include a continual series of May Exhibitions, 15 Years of Minjung Art (National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art, Korea, 1994), ’95 Gwangju Reunification Art Festival (May Cemetery in the Mangwol-dong neighborhood of Gwangju, 1995), and China-Korea Art Exchange Exhibition (Wuhan, China, 2017). He served as the Gwangju Art Award Steering Committee secretary-general, the Gwangju Museum of Art director, and on the board of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation; and he received the First Daedong Art Prize (2007), and the May Mothers’ Prize (2012).
조진호(1952, 광양 출생)
조진호의 작품 세계에 중요한 전환점이 된 것은 1980년 광주 민중항쟁이다. 이후 그는 사회 정치적 문제에 직접적으로 발언하는 현실 참여 미술, 광주 민중미술운동의 중심 멤버로 활동했다. 광주 목판화연구회, 광주전남 미술인 공동체를 창립하여 지역 자생적 민족미술 운동에 매진하였다. 1990년 광주 금남로 일대에서 거리전으로 개최하였고 <대학살도>는 그 전시에 출품한 목판화 작품이다. 이 작품에는 무등산 아래에서 공수부대원들이 무참하게 시민들을 학살하는 장면이 증언되어 있다. 작가의 작업 재료로는 초기 유채, 1980년대 목판화 및 수묵화, 1990년대 수채화, 그리고 2000년 이후 혼합재료 등 여러 매체와 표현 방식을 거치면서 변화와 모색을 해오고 있다.
주요 개인전은 1984년 판화전 《잡풀베기》(광주 아카데미갤러리)를 시작으로 조진호 《목판화전》(광주 K갤러리, 서울 윤갤러리, 1989), 《조진호 수채화전》(갤러리SVAX, 동경, 1991-1992), 《觀-세상을 바라보다》 (로터스갤러리, 광주, 2018)를 비롯하여 20여 회 광주, 서울, 중국에서 실시되었다. 90년대 이후 주요 단체전으로는 《오월전에 지속적으로 참가하였고, 《민중미술 15년 전》(국립현대미술관, 과천, 1994), 《95광주통일미술제》( 망월동 오월묘역, 광주, 1995), 《한중미술교류전》(중국 우한, 2017) 등이 있다. 광주미술상 운영위원회 사무총장, 광주시립미술관 관장, (재)광주비엔날레 이사 등을 역임하였고, 제1회 대동미술상(2007), 오월어머니상(2012) 등을 수상하였다.
