Hong Joo (B. 1968, Gwangju)
The artist and curator Hong Joo, who is also a therapy artist, is a multimedia creative utilizing painting, performance art, and sand animation. The artist lived near Democracy Plaza in May 1980 and, having experienced the Gwangju citizens’ courage to protest government violence and the armed suppression, pays attention to the lives of the marginalized rather than siding with the strong. Recognizing art’s public aspect, the artist has been creating works opening an arena of direction communication with the public through drawing and performance art at historic places and sites with environmental pollution problems. This includes the artist’s more essential intention to pursue human maturity in addition to delivering social messages through her art.
Joo earned her bachelor’s degree in fine art at the Chonnam National University College of Arts, majored in painting at the Chung-Ang University Graduate School, and earned a doctorate in health (art therapy) at the Graduate School of Wonkwang University. She has exhibited her works in over fifty one-person exhibitions in Korea and New York since her fist solo show in 1992, and she also presented performance pieces in showcases such as Gwangju Arirang Project Art Festival: Difference & Peace (Times Square, New York City, 2020). Her curatorial projects include the 2nd Gwangju Biennale Special Exhibition Public Art Project: SooChang Elementary School Noise Barrier Mural (1997), 2000 Gung-dong Project 1: 73,600 Ho (Artstreet in Gwangju Art, 2000), and 100-Person Relay Art (Gwangju May 18 Democracy Plaza, 2014~). She was awarded the Third Gwangju Art Award (1997), the Second Gwangju Biennale Merit Award (1997), and the Gwangju Arts & Culture Award: Heo Baek-ryeon Fine Art Prize (2008); and is the director of Gallery Saeng-gak Sang-ja (Thought Box).
주 홍 (1968, 광주 출생)
작가 겸 기획자, 치유예술가인 주홍은 회화와 행위예술, 샌드 애니메이션 등 다양한 복합매체를 활용한 창작활동가이다. 1980년 5월 민주 광장 근처에 살던 작가는 광주 시민들이 국가폭력에 저항하는 용기와 무력 탄압을 체험하면서 강자의 편에 서 있기보다 소외된 사람의 삶에 주목하게 된다. 작가는 예술의 공공성을 인식하고 역사적인 장소나 환경오염으로 문제가 된 현장에서 드로잉과 퍼포먼스로 대중과 직접적인 소통의 장을 여는 작업을 해오고 있다. 이는 작품을 통해 사회적인 메시지 전달하려는 것만이 아니라 인간의 성숙을 추구하고자 하는 작가의 더 본질적인 의도가 담겨 있다.
전남대학교 예술대학 미술학과와 중앙대학교 대학원 회화과를 거쳐 원광대학교 대학원에서 보건학(예술치료 전공) 박사학위를 취득하였다. 1992년 첫 개인전 이후 한국, 뉴욕 등에서 50여 회 개인전을 가졌고 《광주 아리랑 프로젝트 예술제-다름과 평화》(뉴욕 타임스퀘어, 2020)와 같이 이슈 현장에서 행위예술을 펼치기도 했다. 기획자로서 《제2회 광주비엔날레 특별전 공공미술 프로젝트-‘수창초등학교 방음벽 벽화’》(1997), 《2000궁동프로젝트1-‘7만3천6백호’》(광주 예술의 거리, 2000), 《100인 릴레이아트》(광주 5‧18민주광장, 2014~ ) 등을 기획하였다. 제3회 광주 미술상(1997)과 제2회 광주비엔날레 공훈상(1997), 광주시 문화예술상-허백련 미술상 특별상(2008) 등을 수상하였고, 성균관대학교 문화융합대학원 겸임교수, 갤러리 생각상자 관장이다.
