Heeseung Jeong (B. 1963, Gwangju)
The vivid scene of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising, which Heeseung Jeong experienced in high school, had a deciding influence on Jeong’s life as an artist. He acquired an interest in reality participatory art, and beginning by joining the Minjung Culture Research Group in 1984, he exhibited in trailblazing minjung art exhibitions such as the Three-Person Woodcut Print Exhibition (1985) and The Power of Korean Artists in Their Twentites exhibition (1985). After college graduation, Jeong joined the Gwangju-Jeonnam Artist Community (henceforth GAC) and participated in collaboratively making the hanger picture May Warrior and the prints Gwangju Democratic Uprising Series. Since the GAC’s disbanding in 2002, he has been exhibiting works related to Gwangju’s May to date as a member of the Gwangju National Artist Association.
Major group exhibitions include May Exhibition (1991-2002), 15 Years of Minjung Art (1994), Gwangju Reunification Art Festival (1995), JAALA (Japan Asia Africa Latin-American Artist Association, 1998), Gwangju Democratic Uprising 20th anniversary commemorative May Prints (2000), 21st Century & Asian People (2002), Oasis, Gwangju (2005), Apricot Blossom Appreciation: Apricots Blossoming as Pictures (2009), Jeolla-do in Pictures (2012), History’s Mirror (2015), National Highway No. 1 Exhibition: Asking for Directions on the Road (2017), and MaytoDay: Democratic Spring (2020). He had five one-person exhibitions in Seoul and Gwangju, and his works are included in the collections of the Buguk Culture Foundation, National Gwangju Museum, May 18 Memorial Foundation, Gwangju Museum of Art, Chonnam National University Museum, and the Jeonnam Museum of Art.
정희승 (1963년 광주 출생)
광주에서 나고 자란 정희승에게 고교 시절에 경험했던 5·18광주민중항쟁의 생생한 현장은 그의 작가로서의 삶에 결정적 영향을 미쳤다. 그는 현실 참여 미술에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 호남대학교 미술학과에 재학 중이던 1984년부터 민중문화연구회 활동을 시작으로 [《3인전] (1985), 《한국미술 20대의 힘]전 (1985) 등 선구적 민중미술 전시회들에 출품했다. 대학 졸업 후, 1990년 광주전남미술인공동체(이하 광미공)에 가입하여 공동작업으로 걸개그림<오월전사>와 <광주민중항쟁연작>판화 제작에 참여했다. 2002년 광미공 해단 이후에는 광주 민족미술인협회에 몸담고 현재까지 ‘광주 오월’과 관련한 작품을 발표해오고 있다.
그동안 참여한 주요 단체전은 《오월전》(1991~2022), 《민중미술15년전》(1994), 《광주통일미술제》(1995), 《JAALA(Japan Afria Asia Latin-American Artist Association》(1998), 광주민중항쟁 20주년기념 《5월 판화》 (2000), 《21세기와 아시아의 민중》(2002), 《오아시스, 광주》(2005), 《탐매_그림으로 피어난 매화》(2009), 《그림 속 전라도》(2012), 《역사의 거울》(2015), 《국도1호선전-길에서 길을 묻다》(2017), 《MaytoDay-민주주의의 봄》(2020) 등이 있다. 서울과 광주에서 5회의 개인전을 했고, 주요 작품 소장처로 부국문화재단, 국립 광주박물관, 5·18기념재단, 광주시립미술관, 전남대학교 박물관, 전남도립미술관 등이 있다.
