Hayoon Jay Lee is a Korean-American artist based in Korea and New York, who works in various media such as painting, installation, and performance. Initially an outsider to the United States, Lee works with ‘rice,’ not as a food ingredient, but as an object, motif, and cultural code for her work. As the artist said, “Rice holds life like a seed and symbolizes love and healing energy.” Calming Spirit (2022) with rice in this exhibition is a performance like a ritual ceremony to commune with the spirits of those who devoted their lives for Korean democracy and freedom of Minjung. As the performance unfolds, the artist expects the audience to participate, understand and empathize.
Hayoon Jay Lee earned a BFA and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Among her many honors and awards, Lee has received a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship award from the U.S. Department of Education, a Full Fellowship Artist in Residency Award from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, a best in show distinction award at the 14th International Exhibition at the SoHo 20 Gallery in Chelsea, New York, and a Dapu International Art Award from the Northern Art Museum, Daqing China. Lee has participated in various artist residency programs including: Gwangju Museum of Art (Gwangju, Korea), the Fine Arts Work Center (Provincetown, MA), and Sculpture Space (Utica, NY). Lee has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Korean Cultural Center (Beijing), the University of Kraków (Poland), The Jamaica Art Center & King Manor Museum (New York), Gwangju Museum of Art (Korea), the Elizabeth Foundation of the Arts (NY), The United Nations Gallery (NY), Henan Museum (China), and Jeonbuk Museum of Art (Korea). Her work may be found in the collections of the Zimmerli Art Museum (New Brunswick, NJ), the Gwangju Contemporary Museum of Art (Gwangju, Korea), the Henan Museum (Zhengzhou, China), the QCC Art Gallery (Queens, NY), Hollis Taggart Gallery (Chelsea, NYC), and many private collections.

이하윤은 한국과 뉴욕을 중심으로 활동하는 재미 한인 작가로 회화, 설치, 퍼포먼스 같은 다양한 영역의 작품을 해오고 있다. 미국에서 이방인으로서 삶을 정착한 작가는 한국인에게 익숙한 식재료인 ‘쌀’을 작품의 오브제, 모티프, 문화적 코드로 사용하고 있다. “쌀은 하나의 씨앗처럼 생명을 품고 있는 것으로 사랑과 치유 에너지를 상징이다.”고 작가가 말하듯이, 이번 전시에서 쌀과 함께 하는 <고요한 정신(2022)>은 민주주의와 자유를 위해 목숨을 바친 이들의 정신과 교감하기 위한 하나의 제례 의식과 같은 퍼포먼스이다. 작가는 퍼포먼스가 전개되면서 관객의 참여, 이해와 공감의 장이 이루어질 것으로 기대한다.
이하윤은 메릴랜드 인스티튜트 칼리지 오브 아트 대학교에서 수석졸업 및 동대학교에서 석사를 취득했다. 미국 교육부로부터 제이콥 K. 재비츠 풀 펠로우십을 수상했고 폴락-클라이슬어재단의 작가 레지던시 펠로우쉽, 제14회 국제 미술전 대상 (소호 20갤러리, 뉴욕) 등 다양한 아티스트 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하였다. 이하윤은 한국, 미국, 중국, 유럽에서 다수 개인전, 단체전에 참여하였다. 주요전시는 한국 문화원 (베이징), 크라쿠프 대학교 (폴란드), 킹 매너 박물관 (뉴욕), 광주시립미술관 (한국), 엘리자베스 미술재단 (뉴욕), 전북도립미술관 (한국) 등이 있으며 주요 소장처로 지멀리 미술관 (뉴저지), 광주시립미술관 (한국), 허남성 미술관 (중국), QCC 아트 갤러리 (뉴욕), 다푸 국제 미술센터 (중국), 홀리스 타가트 갤러리 (첼시 뉴욕) 등이 있다.
