Dal-yong Heo (B. 1964, Gwangju)
Born into a family of traditional ink-wash painters in the Nam-do area, Dal-yong Heo entered an art college and majored in ink-wash painting. The artist’s challenge was accepting the present-ness of traditional ink-wash painting into his works amidst contemporary art’s various styles and abundance of expression. Heo sought out a unique painting realm with realist ink-wash painting reflecting aspects of his surroundings and era using paper, ink, and simple coloring. Particularly, he painted masterful works interpreting and visualizing a series of historic events from an aesthetic perspective, as well as works representing May 1980 as part of a generation that experienced the Gwangju Democratic Uprising.
Dal-yong Heo graduated from the College of Arts at Chonnam National University, and he exhibited his works in 21 solo exhibitions and many group and curatorial shows, including a solo show (Shinsegae Gallery, Gwangju, 2010), an invitational exhibition at Mugak-temple (Lotus Gallery, Gwangju), an invitational exhibition (Democratic Uprising Memorial Hall, Busan, 2010), The Fool Who Became a Mountain, in memory of the late President Roh Moo-hyun (Sochon Art Factory Cube Museum, Gwangju, 2018), and a solo show (Art Space House, Gwangju, 2020). He contributed to a presidential painting project and received the Wonjin Art Prize. His works are included in the collections of the Gwangju Museum of Art, the Kimdaejung Convention Center, the Gwangju High Prosecutor’s Office, the Gwangju Nam-gu District Office, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, the June 15 Reunification School, and the National Gwangju Museum, and he served as the chairperson of the Gwangju Federation of National Artist Groups.
허달용(1964년, 광주 출생)
남도의 전통 수묵화를 가업으로 이어온 집안에서 태어난 허달용은 미술대학에 입학하여 수묵화를 전공했다. 현대 미술의 다양한 양식, 표현의 풍요 속에서 작가의 과제는 전통 수묵화의 현재성을 작품에 수용하는 것이었다. 그는 종이와 먹 그리고 단순한 채색을 통해 오늘을 사는 작가 주변의 모습, 시대성을 반영한 현실주의 수묵화로 독자적인 회화세계를 모색했다. 특히 광주 민주 항쟁을 경험한 세대로 80년 오월을 형상화한 작품뿐 아니라 일련의 역사적 사건을 미학적 관점에서 해석하고 시각화하는 수작을 남겼다. 최근 작가의 작품은 그간의 작품으로부터 전환하여 또 다른 시선과 방식으로 작품관의 변화를 시도하고 있다.
허달용 작가는 전남대학교 예술대학을 졸업하였고, 2000년 광주 신세계갤러리 개인전, 2010년 민주공원 초대전(민주항쟁기념관, 부산)과 무각사 초대전(Lotus갤러리, 광주), 2018년 《노무현 서거 9주년 산이 된 바보 전》(소촌 아트팩토리 큐브미술관, 광주) 이후 2020년 예술공간 집(광주)에서 실시된 개인전까지 21회의 개인전과 다수의 단체전, 그룹전, 기획전에 참여하였다. 청남대 대통령 기록화 제작에 참여하였고 제작수상원진미술상을 받았다. 작품 소장처로 광주시립미술관, 김대중 컨벤션센터, 광주지방검찰청, 광주광역시 남구청, 광주시교육청, 6.15통일학교, 국립광주박물관이 있으며 광주 민족 예술인 단체 총연합 이사장을 역임하였다.
