Milena Popov

Milena Popov-Nena is Yugoslavian born New York City based multimedia artist, theorist, and educator. She received her PhD in Theories of Arts and Media from the University of Arts, Belgrade and both MFA and BFA in Painting and Art Education from the Academy of Arts, Novi Sad, as well as a graduate course at the Summer Academy at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Currently, she teaches at the Brooklyn College and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City and has experience developing and teaching various courses, from studio art, art history, art theory, media studies, critical theory and interdisciplinary studies to environmental sustainability, biology, physics, astronomy and robotics. Popov has extensive experience in merging art and science fields together in her research, teaching and artworks. Recently, for the John Jay College she has developed an interdisciplinary course called Eco Art and Design, a studio art course that is bridging art and environmental sustainability studies in various ways. Once approved this course will be one of the foundation courses for the new College minor- the Sustainability Minor and also the link between two departments. Popov has written and published numerous critiques for other artists, other texts on art, media and culture, held many lectures, and participated in panels and conferences. For the past 15 years she has worked as an educator at colleges (such as Brooklyn, John Jay and LaGuardia Colleges in New York City), schools (most of the NYC public and private schools), museums (such as Peggy Guggenheim in Venice). Popov is the founder, organizer, and moderator of Milena’s Intellectual Salon (since 2012) and the co-founder and member of multimedia art group Aufwiedersehen (since 1997). As an artist she is also a member of few art associations such as Artist Association of Williamsburg Art & Historic Center, NYC (since 2002) and ULUVZ (Association of Artists in Vojvodina in Zrenjanin, since 1998). Her work is included in both public and private collections around the world, including Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in Novi Sad (Serbia). She is the recipient of several grants, honors and awards, and has exhibited her artworks at 20 solo and over 60 exhibits around the world.
